Here at home, we warned against Big Government, because we knew concentrated decisionmaking, no matter how well-intentioned, was a danger to liberty and prosperity. We Republicans saw clearly the dangers of collectivism: not only the military threat, but the deeper threat to the souls of people bound in dependence. They could never see the indomitable spirit of people determined to be free from government control-free to build a better future with their own heads, hands, and hearts.

Never again will people trust planners and paper shufflers more than they trust themselves. We see with new clarity that centralized government bureaucracies created in this century are not the wave of the future. More important, it liberates the way people think. The Fall of the Berlin Wall symbolizes an epochal change in the way people live. We have defended our core principles for 138 years but never has this country, and the world, been so receptive to our message. Republicans have always believed that economic prosperity comes from individual enterprise, not government programs.

We believe that most problems of human making are within the capacity of human ingenuity to solve.įor good reason, millions of new Americans have flocked to our shores: America has always been an opportunity society. But in all that people can individually do as well for themselves, Government ought not to interfere." The Vision Shared: The Republican Platform, Uniting Our Family, Our Country, Our WorldĪbraham Lincoln, our first Republican President, expressed the philosophy that inspires Republicans to this day: "The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities.
